The violation of the weighing of products remains a sword of Damocles over consumers, both in the retail and wholesale networks, in the state and private sector.

In the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud, although digital scales predominate in commercial and gastronomic establishments, the well-known Yara scales still cheat by weighing grams less, which can add up to kilograms.

In plain sight, violations come and go when using Yara scales: weighings with broken or tampered weights; deteriorated or patched-up weighing plates with rivets; poor maintenance, which should include calibration, painting, cleaning, and verification of the equipment; incorrect handling—these are some of the issues pointed out by specialists.

It is worth asking whether state administrations and new economic actors could plan within their annual expenditure budget projects to allocate funds for investment, maintenance, repair, and the purchase of digital scales.

It is essential to reflect on the usefulness of using safe equipment as established by the International System of Units, although some who are resistant to change continue to use the pound instead of the kilogram as a unit of measurement.

To everyone’s delight, quality is now being ‘weighed’ as a sign of respect in matters of rights and duties, with more digital scales being installed in establishments. According to Alquímides Machandy Goire—a self-employed worker specializing in scale and balance repairs, the only one of his kind in Isla de la Juventud—the situation could be different if more state entities and new economic actors joined in, because the wounds caused by a faulty, uncalibrated, or broken scale are guaranteed to be ‘sores’.
