At the Simón Bolívar Basic Cooperative Production Unit, to which they belong, the province started planting the exportable crop, with a commitment to establish 480 hectares of covered tobacco, which produces the best leaves, and another 100 hectares of sun-exposed tobacco.
In recognition of other producers for their years of dedication to the aromatic crop, the Carlos Baliño Honorary Distinction was also awarded to tobacco workers from this company on behalf of the National Union of Agricultural, Forestry, and Tobacco Workers.
«The economic restrictions of the times have turned the Lázaro Peña Company into a catalyst and an example of tradition, as its workers seek alternatives to meet production plans,» said Yusleivis Cabriales Valdés, the secretary of the tobacco workers’ union in the province.
She further explained that, as a labor movement, they maintain stable results in unionization and social impact projects, which is why several of their groups, among the 18 productive forms engaged in tobacco production, are National Vanguard for the current year.
During the opening of the tobacco campaign, party and government leaders, along with members of the CTC and the union, joined the workers in a symbolic planting, dedicating it to the 158th anniversary of the start of the Cuban war of independence against Spanish colonial rule on October 10, 1868.
