Nothing in recent times surpasses the joy of the 800-watt photovoltaic module that will soon be installed in the home of Caridad Hernández Borrego, Heroine of Labor of the Republic of Cuba since 2003.

“This opportunity is an injection of energy, vital in such complex times,” says Hernández, who from the age of 18 dedicated herself to postal services. Her thousands of volunteer hours, exemplary attitude toward work, and constant innovation made her the only Heroine of that sector in Artemisa to this day.

At her home on 33rd Street, between 30 and 32, apartment 2 of building #10, technicians from the Copextel Company arrived to deliver and install the panel. The rest of the eight Artemisa residents who hold the same honorary title already enjoy this benefit.

The kit, priced at 75,200 (to be paid through different methods), includes six meters of cable and a connector. In this case, four more meters are needed to mount it on the second floor, along with another connector and a double-throw switch, to be purchased depending on supply and demand, explains neighbor Félix Hernández Valdés, who helps her with these tasks.

Nevertheless, she knows that light is closer now. She takes the manual in hand to learn what can be connected to the system’s capacity. Cary tells us it “will power the refrigerator, the multipurpose cooker, the rice cooker, the television, the blender… and not only her appliances, but also her neighbors will be able to use the panel as needed.

“It will bring quality of life, even peace of mind to my days,” she says gratefully, with the humility of someone who has bought something useful also for those who help her daily.

In addition to the elements included in the kit, sometimes more cables, connectors, and other components are required—items that are often sold at very high prices. Photo: Yudasis Moreno Benítez

Another 200 Artemisa residents in the Education and Public Health sectors have already been assigned solar panels of different capacities. Meanwhile, the province will receive 123 kits for centers that serve the public, such as bank branches, outpatient clinics, maternity and elderly homes, as well as telecommunications companies and funeral homes.

Alongside these alternatives that promote renewable energy through solar panels—complemented by photovoltaic parks connected to the National Electric System and water supply pumps—the province is also working on 76 windmills across its 11 municipalities. All of this reflects one intention: to use an energy source that no one can block.
