After days of preparation, union leaders in Camagüey are ready to guide the discussion process for the draft Labor Code, which will begin in the region this Monday, September 8.

More than 1,800 assemblies are planned, with the participation of over 140,000 workers from all labor sectors, including new economic actors.

According to Yamisleidys López Fernández, general secretary of the provincial bureau of the Cuban Workers’ Central (CTC), the pilot assembly that will kick off the process will be held at the Specialized Workshops UEB in Camagüey, part of the Azutecnia company—a collective that has been a vanguard for several years.

This meeting, as the union leader explained, will serve as a learning experience for how to conduct these gatherings in practice. Union leaders from various workplaces, provincial unions, and other municipalities will be present.

“Nonetheless,” added López Fernández, “although we will continue with preparatory union meetings, this is mostly self-study, especially for the workers who need to read the document in order to add, modify, or comment on any aspect.”

She also noted that even after the assemblies have concluded, any worker who wishes to express an opinion, ask a question, or offer a suggestion may do so at the designated command posts.

This discussion process of the draft Labor Code will continue until November 30—a highly significant and demanding project for the labor movement.
