An economical alternative is helping to revive egg production in the province of Ciego de Ávila, a sector that has been in decline in recent years due to financial shortages that limited the import of high-quality animal feed.

The strategic alliance currently allows the state-run company to continue managing the laying hens with its specialized personnel, while private agricultural producers finance the purchase of feed from other countries. This arrangement is gradually reviving egg production, although the volumes are still insufficient to ensure distribution through the regulated basic food basket, as was customary in the past.

Achieving 159.6% of the production plan in the first half of this year—compared to 61.6% at the end of last year—marks a step forward in delivering this nutritious food to health institutions for the Maternal and Child Care Program, special diets, the Family Feeding System that supports people with low personal income, and other prioritized areas of social consumption.

The major challenge for the poultry company in Ciego de Ávila is to maintain efficiency levels in order to recover through its own sales revenue. This effort is currently supported by bank loans aimed at offsetting the entity’s accumulated financial losses and revitalizing the presence of this nutritious food on everyone’s table.

Soon, Trabajadores will dedicate more space and reflections to this topic, as food production is a matter of national security—especially considering that the company in Ciego de Ávila used to supply eggs to the local population and several provinces across the country.
