In every block, a Committee; in every neighborhood, Revolution… was heard years ago as the smell of smoke filled the air from wood-fired stoves used to prepare caldosa. Children recited poems, and families gathered under the protection of the flag to celebrate the anniversary of the creation of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR).

Today, the reality is different, as dust and cobwebs seem to have settled over many of its foundations. It is inevitable to notice how its activity has significantly declined, and people long for those good times.

The CDRs were created to watch over, guide, and support communities. Now, as we face such complex scenarios, the country needs them more than ever to continue bringing our history to life. Just as they have explained to us many times—for example, how voluntary work was born from Che’s ideas while simultaneously calling on us to participate in one of these initiatives.

There are young people without a compass to help them find jobs and strengthen values that prevent them from being led down the wrong path, and grandparents who miss domino tournaments or neighborhood gatherings that once sought to move the nation forward

Even so, in times of crisis, when the fierce winds of recent meteorological phenomena battered the national territory, the warmth and love of the CDR members were also stirred. The response was immediate—CDRs knocked on doors in the neighborhoods, invoking one of the qualities most deeply rooted in us: solidarity, and calling for support for the affected provinces.

The truth is that we shouldn’t have to wait for a misfortune for the organization to be noticed in the daily lives of Cubans. It would be wonderful to feel their presence among us again because, just as the family is the fundamental cell of our society, the CDRs are a fundamental cell of the Revolution.

We already have cell phones to stay connected minute by minute, organize activities more efficiently, and spread a legacy of more than 60 years. What are we waiting for to use them to mobilize CDR members?
