Authorities from Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago will begin negotiations for a Memorandum of Understanding on migration that will serve as a mechanism to regulate the flow of people between both countries, Cuban Foreign Ministry reported. This legal framework will also serve to combat illegal trafficking of migrants, trafficking of persons, and will promote appropriate and respectful treatment of the human rights of those travelers, stressed a release posted in Cubaminrex.com.
As part of the first round of immigration talks held in Port of Spain on August 28 and 29, the parties assessed the behavior of migration flows between the two countries and exchanged information on the current regulations.
According to information from the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the two Caribbean nations ‘reaffirmed the willingness and commitment of their respective governments to carry out joint actions in order to ensure a regular, orderly and safe flow of travelers between the two nations.’
The sessions were chaired by the director of the Directorate of Consular Affairs and Foreign Residents Abroad, Ernesto Soberón, and the Permanent Secretary (Vice Minister) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Caricom, Reita Toussant.
