The country is going through a momentous phase in which the union is called to play a leading role. Trade union control, which far from being a slogan, means greater participation of workers in the management and supervision of companies, thus becomes particularly relevant.

The problem arises when, in many workplaces you find that the union continues to be the one who passes list at the assembly and signs what the administration puts before it. The 22 Congress Municipal and Provincial Conferences themselves recognized this: there is superficiality in administrative control and lack of demand for union structures.

The challenge is to move from formality to action with concrete measures. Establish audit committees that regularly audit financial statements and require transparency in management. And this is achieved only through assemblies of affiliates and workers with power, in which they discuss and approve the distribution of profits and investment plans, underpinned by renewable strategies and with full use of local potentialities and available resources.

Union leadership requires technical and political preparation, leaders trained to face new scenarios with rigor and responsibility. Examples already exist, such as the discussions on the 2027 Plan and Budget, in which trade unions have pushed workers’ assemblies with a voice to approve economic and social goals. These show that they can be more than a formality, to become a guarantor of social justice and collective participation.

There are no magic formulas to solve the already accumulated trade-offs. What is imperative is a change of mindset, because new prerogatives are useless if those who exercise them maintain the same routines that previously limited union action.
