The educational sector in Holguín is preparing for the start of the 2026–2027 school year, scheduled for September 1, when more than 131,000 students will return to classrooms across a network of over 1,280 institutions — the largest in the country.
Despite the challenging energy and economic context and the limitations caused by the U.S. blockade, organizational strategies have been designed to ensure the greatest possible in‑person attendance. According to Dr. Luis Felipe Batista Rodríguez, provincial director of Education, all 51 boarding schools will host their full enrollment of 3,062 students.
A key strategy involves 156 educational zones across the province, each coordinated by a school director, to pool resources within local communities. This allows students to complete tasks and projects on days they are not physically at school. Additionally, 42 transportation routes are being prioritized for more than 4,000 external students, especially those from remote areas like San Andrés.
Infrastructure improvements are underway in 22 schools, alongside recovery efforts for 524 facilities damaged by Hurricane Melisa. Of these, 157 remain pending, and eight will temporarily operate in family or teacher homes. To address the need for 2,000 teachers, alternatives include increasing teaching loads, hiring specialists from production and services, and incorporating university students.
