The distribution in Cuba of the 760 tons of skimmed milk powder that were part of the solidarity aid shipment from the governments of Mexico and Uruguay, which arrived at the port of Havana last week, began in retail units of domestic trade in the capital municipality of Cotorro.
“Ten point four tons were delivered to 52 warehouses and points in the territory,” said Dayadna Fernández Columbié, deputy director of the Havana Dairy Complex Company (ECLH).
The entity, belonging to the Superior Organization of Business Management (OSDE) of the Agro-Food Industry, is responsible for receiving and distributing the powdered milk that arrived in the country through the capital’s port.
“This shipment will benefit 264,000 Cuban girls and boys aged 1 to 6, another 9,770 who receive diets for chronic illnesses, and 14,200 pregnant women, in addition to public institutions,” stated Iván Lolo Milanés.
The head of the Dairy Group at OSDE added that this complements the ongoing distribution in the nation of quantities of the product imported by the revolutionary government for the regulated family basket and other destinations.
The start of the delivery operation to Interior Trade units in Cotorro was observed by His Excellency Juan Andrés Canessa Franco, Ambassador of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, who explained that the aid was sent to Cuba using funds from the Strategic Cooperation Agreement adopted by the governments of Mexico and Uruguay in 2023.
The diplomat noted that the ties of friendship and solidarity between Cuba and Uruguay began when José Martí served as consul of that country in New York, from April 16, 1887, until March 1, 1892.
“And they have continued to this day with the José Martí Eye Hospital in Montevideo, where Cuban and Uruguayan specialists have performed free surgeries on 120,000 Uruguayans,” he highlighted.
The institution emerged during Operation Miracle in 2005, through which Uruguayans of all ages traveled to Havana to regain their vision, and since 2007 it has stood in the Uruguayan capital as a living monument of solidarity.
Canessa Franco reaffirmed his government’s willingness to continue sending solidarity aid to Cuba in the form of food, as well as components for photovoltaic parks and spare parts needed in thermoelectric plants.
The new shipment of solidarity aid arrived on Monday, May 18, at the port of Havana aboard a ship, as an expression of solidarity from the peoples and governments of Mexico and Uruguay with the Cuban nation, amid the complex economic difficulties the country faces due to the brutal anti-Cuban escalation of the current U.S. administration.
