When it comes to voluntary workdays for food production, workers don’t make excuses; on the contrary, they go mobilized by the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba (CTC)The CTC (Workers' Central Union of Cuba) was founded on January 28, 1939 by Lázaro Peña under the name Confederación de Trabajadores de Cuba (Confederation of Cuban Workers) to support food sovereignty, aware of the vital importance of their contribution in the face of the intensification of the economic war by the U.S. government.
These initiatives arrive at the right time, as they give a boost to agricultural development, aimed at eliminating the import-oriented mentality in production practices, to achieve self-sufficiency, increase exports, substitute imports, and establish the much-discussed production chains.
I have witnessed the massive participation in the fields, whether in the recovery of organoponic gardens, orchards, plots, or the increase of backyards and parcels included in the territorial development strategy.
Undoubtedly, these workdays have introduced a new concept of managing productive tasks, and the effort is reflected in a slight increase in root crops and vegetables.
It is no secret that agriculture seeks to reverse a difficult situation, as it lacks productivity due to a shortage of workers, low wages, and insufficient resources to dignify the labor, among other causes.
We all know about the harsh economic situation the country is going through, so it is time to change our mindset; we cannot afford to spend millions importing food when systems of agro-food production can be built in every locality to ensure self-sufficiency.
