In Pinar del Río, there are 179 local development projects (LDPs), representing a 42 percent increase compared to the end of 2024. The creation of these projects is prioritized as part of government strategies to strengthen municipal autonomy.
In 2025, 42.1 million pesos from territorial contributions were allocated for this purpose. Of the LDPs, 136 are economic-productive, although only 19 percent of them contribute to the accounts, given their recent creation.
In his accountability report to the Provincial Council, Eumelín González Sánchez, governor of Pinar del Río, stated that expanding these projects focuses on fulfilling the objectives of the Food and Nutritional Security and Sovereignty Law, as well as increasing local production of construction materials and promoting nature tourism, although other potentialities have also been identified.
Work is underway on the design of new projects associated with agricultural farms, notable for their ability to integrate a value chain of primary production and processing, promoting agroecology and the use of renewable energy sources.
In 10 of the 11 municipalities there are clay deposits, so it is planned to increase the number of traditional kilns for the production of bricks and other elements that help solve one of the most pressing problems affecting the population: the deterioration of housing stock caused by the frequent impact of hurricanes. There are still 37,233 damages pending from Hurricane Ian and 5,543 from previous events, with more than 16,500 being total collapses.
The scenic beauty, high degree of endemism, and other natural assets with which western Cuba was endowed provide the platform for the promotion of tourism by local actors, integrating diverse forms of management.
