The Union Cannot Strike Out

2026 has started for the Cuban trade union movement like a playoff, with little margin for improvisation. The crown bears an inscription: to achieve a Workers’ Central Union of Cuba (CTCCentral de Trabajadores de Cuba (CTC)The CTC (Workers' Central Union of Cuba) was founded on January 28, 1939 by Lázaro Peña under the name Confederación de Trabajadores de Cuba (Confederation of Cuban Workers)) as close as possible to the one created and led by Lázaro Peña, but adapted to the current economic and social context. All plays and hits are possible—except striking out.

These are months in which the priorities, or “starting pitchers,” are well defined: completing leadership positions throughout the organizational structure, increasing affiliation in the non-state sector, supporting the Government Program, better representation of workers before administrations from the grassroots to the national union, final sessions of the 22nd Congress—postponed since 2025 and possibly held virtually in July, in line with the country’s reality—greater creative activism on social networks, and efficient economic contributions from the business sector, to name just a few.

Of course, to emerge victorious in this game that began on January 1, it is essential to discard worn-out formulas regarding emulation parameters and the holding of ceremonies and decorations; at the same time, it is urgent to tackle more pressing issues, for example, in workplaces with unpaid wages. Meeting less and working more should be “the final scoreboard,” as well as reducing loss-making companies to minimal levels. Strengthening the proposal for the new Labor Code and giving renewed attention to our Heroes of Labor are also crucial.

It is also good to set “advance rules,” since this is the year we celebrate the centenary of the birth of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, who more than once affirmed that the union must be a counterbalance to the administration and constantly safeguard the interests of those who elected the secretaries. We must be vigilant with the history of the CTCCentral de Trabajadores de Cuba (CTC)The CTC (Workers' Central Union of Cuba) was founded on January 28, 1939 by Lázaro Peña under the name Confederación de Trabajadores de Cuba (Confederation of Cuban Workers) and the unions, but from more attractive and revolutionary perspectives—not in slogans, but in projects.

Lastly, no less important are the “home runs” of this organization in preparing for the defense of the country, as imperial threats intensify following the aggression against Venezuela. In essence, the challenge of Cuban trade unionism is to recover that leadership role it has always had in our society—not only in May Day rallies, but also in the production of wealth to be distributed. I repeat: everything is possible, except striking out.
