The National Occupational Safety and Health Campaign will take place in Cuba from November 1 to 30. This initiative comes as the country continues to show a downward trend in recent years in the number of workplace accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

The opening ceremony was held at the Camilo Cienfuegos Electronic Industry Company in Havana and was presided over by Leobanys Ávila Góngora, a member of the Organizing Committee for the 22nd Congress of the Cuban Workers’ Central (CTC), and Ángel San Martín Dupoté, head of the National Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

In his keynote address, the expert from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) highlighted that Cuba’s response to Hurricane Melissa reaffirmed the nation’s organizational, preventive, and mobilization capabilities, with a strong emphasis on human safety and protection.

“There is nothing more important in the labor process than preserving the lives of workers,” emphasized San Martín.

He noted that globally, approximately three million workers die each year due to work-related accidents and illnesses, according to data from the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In Cuba, the National Office of Statistics and Information recently reported that from January to June, there were 436 workplace accidents, resulting in 420 injuries and 15 deaths—figures lower than those recorded during the same period the previous year.

During the launch of the National Occupational Safety and Health Campaign, the Camilo Cienfuegos Electronic Industry Company was recognized by the CTC and MTSS for its achievements in monitoring and implementing relevant safety standards.

On that note, the company’s general director, Edel Gómez Gómez, emphasized that they have established an approved safety policy, are working toward certification as a Healthy Company, have trained personnel in a culture of prevention, and maintain a near-zero incidence rate of workplace accidents.

The national campaign adopted the ILO’s proposed theme: “Revolutionizing Occupational Safety and Health: The Role of Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization.”
