The exercise of the National Assembly’s supreme control over the Ministry of Transport (Mitrans) is a strength for the sector, said Danna Álvarez Piñeiro, head of the Planning, Organization and Information Directorate of the Ministry, during a press conference.

«It will allow us to identify shortcomings and seek improvements in the work of the sector,» she stressed.

She recalled that last January 8, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Party, Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People’s Power, informed Mitrans that the parliamentary control exercise approved in the last ordinary session of the legislative body, held in December 2024, would be carried out.

The directive referred that between January and February Mitrans began a plan of visits to the territories, presided over by the cadres who attend them and integrated, in addition, by specialists of different directions: «We visited each of the structures in the provinces and the Special Municipality Isla de la Juventud. We invited the deputies of the areas to accompany us,» she said.

She added that at the beginning of June, they will visit the provinces in the same composition and they will review the agreements and the plan of action drawn up during the previous tour.

Danna pointed out that despite the limitations resulting from the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba more than six decades ago, work has been done to respond to the proposals made by the deputies and the people.

She said that since the end of 2024, the sector has been given the task of elaborating, by branch and territory, an Action Plan for the Accelerated Recovery of Transport, with the participation of the Superior Organizations of Entrepreneurial Management (OSDEs, in Spanish) and the structures of the Provincial Transport Directorates, including the Special Municipality Isla de la Juventud, aimed at improving the quality of services to the population.

Among the examples given, she mentioned that 10 provinces and the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud already have tricycle and ecomobile services; the Palatino Terminal has a project of 20 hybrid and electric buses; in Sancti Spiritus, ecomobiles are being manufactured for the transportation of people, and electric hearses are being assembled.

She added that, together with the Universidad Tecnológica de La Habana José Antonio Echeverría (CUJAE, in Spanish), they are working on the project for energy transition in the transportation sector, that rail lines have been restored in various areas and that the Havana-ExpoCuba train will soon be in operation.

Aware of how much remains to be done in this sector, which is vital for the people and the economy of the country, the Board stated: «We have a lot to do, a lot to do; as long as the population is dissatisfied, we will be dissatisfied.

With the Resolution No. 112 of the Fourth Ordinary Session of the X Legislature, it was approved to carry out the exercise of the highest audit of the Ministry of Transportation, led by the Committee of Services Attention and with the participation of the Committee of Economic Affairs and the Committee of Education, Culture, Science, Technology and Environment.

The high-level audit will examine the fulfillment of the specific missions of the Ministry of Transportation, its plan for the economy, as well as the plan for passenger and cargo transportation. It will also examine the results of the implementation of the government’s projections to correct distortions and stimulate the economy, among other things.
