Getting the Union to Work

Unity, coordination and consensus with the administrative directions of the sector’s groups are elements that characterize the work of the Energy and Mining Union (Sntem, in Spanish) in the province of Las Tunas, and are also a guarantee of the successes achieved and to come.

And this way of running processes opens up space for employees to take a leading role in prioritized tasks, increases their sense of belonging, and encourages them to take on challenges and achieve goals.

No one told me about it. I have personal experience of the united march into the future, for example, in the assembly of the Nueva Línea Photovoltaic Solar Park, which is now finalizing the details of assembly and construction to connect to the National Electric Energy System, and with the workers’ organization they are already connected.

«Today, a non-working Friday for many Cubans, we administrative and union leaders are at work. We have formed the trade union section and, in a voluntary day of work, we are cleaning and sanitizing some of the vast areas where this strategic project of the nation is being built,» emphasized Yariety Grotestan Díaz, General Secretary of the Sntem Provincial Bureau.

Yariety said that the trade union section was founded with the 37 members of the new labor collective, its leadership was elected, formed mainly by young people who recognize the role and importance of the affiliation, for this reason she trusts in the fulfillment of all the missions that are directed to them.

And at the site, Yariety and engineer Carlos Rafael Arias Sobrino, director of Empresa Eléctrica Las Tunas, coordinated the increase in the frequency and number of participants in this type of workday, in which those mobilized perform non-specialized activities to support the progress of the park’s assembly and ensure that everything is ready for its future inauguration.

After four o’clock in the afternoon, the day ended with an Emulation Check, where the workers with the most outstanding results for the week received the appropriate recognition and hard-earned congratulations.

«Volunteer work has a history here,» said Mariluz Silva Rodríguez, a member of the CTC secretariat in the municipality of Puerto Padre, adding that the trade union movement has been present in Nueva Línea since the beginning of construction, with volunteer mobilizations on weekends to facilitate the assembly of panels and their attachments, which have contributed to speeding up the completion of the works.
