With family, colleagues and friends on hand, his ashes were interred at the Veterans Pantheon in the capital’s Colón cemetery.

Second Party Secretary Jose Ramon Machado Ventura delivered the central remarks, while President Miguel Diaz-Canel lamented the death of the revolutionary hero who accompanied Fidel on the Granma expedition to launch the uprising against Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship.

Efigenio, as a founding member of the Rebel Army’s Frank Pais Second Eastern Front, and another two brothers who died during the insurrection, made outstanding contributions to Cuba’s definitive independence.

After the 1959 victory, he headed the National Revolutionary Police; led a battalion against mercenary troops at Playa Giron; and later played an important role in Cuba’s internationalist missions in Algeria and Angola.

The Havana hospital ‘Hermanos Ameijeiras’ is named after the three brothers. (Taken from en.granma.cu)
