China and Cuba review implementation of biotechnology projects

China and Cuba on Friday reviewed the launch of a joint biotechnology innovation center, which is a key to the scientific development based on projects and techniques obtained by the island.
Yan Hua, secretary of the Communist Party Committee in Yongzhou, Hunan Province, and Marta Ayala, general deputy director of the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, addressed the issue during a meeting.

This center is in the equipping phase and its construction is part of the bilateral cooperation between the two countries in that strategic sector, Ambassador Carlos Miguel Pereira told Prensa Latina.

As well as meeting with Yan, Ayala held talks with Ban Zhongbo, Mayor of Fangchenggang City, and other local leaders. The Cuban official reiterated the BioCubaFarma group’s interest in joining the new high-tech industrial zone built there.

The project includes the construction of a cooperation platform to provide better services in public healthcare and also a joint venture that will develop almost a dozen Cuban medicines to treat heart and cerebrovascular diseases, different kinds of cancer and chronic hepatitis B, among others.

This project is the result of a recent agreement signed between BioCubaFarma and Guangxi Fukang Medical Investment and Management Co Ltd, which will also cover research, development and commercialization of the island’s products. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
