Díaz-Canel Rejects U.S. Hostility and Thanks Support to Cuba

Relations between the United States and Cuba continue today influenced by minority but politically powerful U.S. groups, which promote hostility, said here Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel.

Those groups hope to return our country to a past of subordination and exclusion, left behind a long time ago, said the Cuban president in a solidarity meeting with his country, held in the emblematic Riverside church.

That place welcomed in the year 2000 the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, occasion referred to by Diaz-Canel, who thanked the expressions of support to the greater of the Antilles.

According to the head of State, the enemies of his country use deceit and slander, with powerful financial resources and the manipulating support of influential news media.

They have managed to promote new political measures aimed at strangling the Cuban economy, stressed Diaz-Canel after recalling that the U.S. blockade, almost 60 years old, is the main obstacle to development and welfare of his compatriots.

However, he emphasized amid applause and exclamations by an audience of over two thousand people in the New York temple, they will always face the patriotic union of Cubans and the ideas of Independence and rebelliousness of our nation.

They will always face the rejection and activism of Cuba’s friends in many parts of the world, including their sisters and brothers in the United States. On another part, Diaz-Canel said the task now concentrating the attention of the Cuban people is the massive process of discussion of the Constitution draft, scheduled to be adopted by referéndum at the beginning of next year.

That step, he added, is the expression of the country we wish for, as the commitment to continue building socialism, with loyalty to the ideals that have accompanied the struggle for Independence and social justice in Cuba throughout its history.

In a few days, next October 10, recalled the President, will mark 150 years of the Cuban call for independence, when a group of patriots, led by Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, proclaimed the beginning of armed struggle for liberty and abolition of slavery.

Diaz-Canel also ratified the solidarity and unflinching commitment of the Cuban revolution to the cause of justice and the right of peoples to dream and accomplish a better world, that is possible, he stated. This is our salute, because this is what best friends do when they meet after a long time, said the Cuban president, who traveled to this city to participate in the high-level segment of the 73 session period of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
