Today, May 5, during a formal ceremony in the Palacio de la Revolución, the Ecuadoran leader will receive the José Martí Order, the highest distinction granted by the Council of State to figures from other countries.
I will wear the Order medal on my chest, but I have always carried José Martí in my heart, Correa said, referring to the planned decoration.
Established in 1972, the Order is awarded to Cuban citizens, those from abroad, and heads of state and government for significant accomplishments in promoting of peace and serving humanity, for valuable contributions in education, culture, sciences, and sports, among other outstanding creative efforts.
Among those who have received the Order are Latin American Presidents Hugo Chávez, Nicolás Maduro, Evo Morales and Salvador Allende, as well as Cuban cultural greats including Nicolás Guillén, Alicia Alonso, and Cintio Vitier.
The last day of Correa’s official visit includes an appearance at the University of Havana, where he will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate; a tribute to José Martí at the city’s memorial in the Plaza de la Revolución; and a meeting with President Raúl Castro Ruz. (Taken from en.granma.cu)
