Cuba and Japan Interested in Expanding Economic and Trade Ties

Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra, and the parliamentary Deputy Foreign Minister of Japan, Hitoshi Kikawada have expressed the interest that both countries expand their economic and trade ties.

According to the article published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, the new foreign investment law and the Special Development Area of Mariel, in the province of Artemisa, favor that purpose.

In the meeting, held on Tuesday, there were discussions on several issues on the international agenda and the Cuban vice foreign minister thanked Japan for their support of the UN resolution against the US blockade of Cuba.

Kikawada also met yesterday, during his first day of the official visit to this island, with Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Economy and Planning, Ricardo Cabrisas.

The officials noted the rising development of bilateral relations, while confirming their willingness to further promote the exchanges in areas of common interest.

Kikawada’s visit follows that made several weeks ago to Japan by the first Cuban Vice president Miguel Díaz-Canel, who declared that relations between the nations were at an excellent stage.

During his stay in the Asian nation, which lasted from May 31st to June 3rd, Diaz-Canel expressed to Prensa Latina the desire of the Cuban government to deepen and expand trade links and to maintain political dialogue.

We have come a long way since 2014 in the commercial and political relations between Havana and Tokyo, he declared back then.

Cuba and Japan established diplomatic ties on December 21, 1929, and according to the Cuban Foreign Ministry itself, the bonds have been closer in recent years. (Taken from Prensa Latina News Agency)
