How to Destroy Carcinogenic Cells

celulasScientists from six universities of three continents developed, after two decades of studies, a mechanism that makes the carcinogenic cells self-destroy, the specialized magazine Nature Chemistry informed.

The find will contribute to a new approach in the search of a remedy against cancer. The idea consists in creating a molecule that will transport sodium ions and chloride to the cells with cancer providing its self-destruction, a treatment that will also help patients with cystic fibrosis.

The achievement of the scientists from South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia is that they had created a conveyor of synthetic ions that join those from chloride and is able to start the apoptosis either in the normal cells or the cancerous ones.

Although the prodigiousness was discovered two decades ago, a similar natural conveyor with similar capacities, this synthetic one is mucho more efficient and has demonstrated it works in the biological systems. (PL)
