After a month of the concert, it is still resounding all over Cuba the echoes of that historical concert where the song El Necio (The Stupid) became an anthem and joined in the same place the Cuban Five with Silvio Rodriguez a crowd of many people accompanying them in an infinite choir. That same night they also sung that song from 1967, La Era (The Era) the one that made its greatest effort to give birth a heart, and in the worst moments in the hole was many times hummed by Tony, Rene, Gerardo, Ramon and Fernando.
One of its protagonists, the Hero of the Cuban Republic, Fernando Gonzalez Llort, gives us an exclusive interview to Trabajadores Newspaper, on how they managed to do the most transcendental cultural moments in Cuba.
“It was all Tony’s dream (Antonio Guerrero, one of the Cuban Five). He was constantly in touch with Silvio Rodriguez and one day he commented him he dreamt he was arriving to Cuba freed and that he went from the airport directly to Silvio’s house to eat Niurka’s (Silvio’s wife) croquettes,” Fernando says while he smiles.
“And the day came that historical December 17, 2014 when Antonio and my brothers Ramon and Gerardo returned to the Homeland. That was a very busy day as any one can imagine. But, nevertheless, Tony managed to call Silvio and told him that unfortunately, he could not make his dream come true.”
“He keeps on explaining,” Fernando says, “and Silvio answered that if he would like, he could go to his 62nd concert on Saturday, December 20 as part of his round all over Cuban neighborhoods, on the yard of Ciudad Deportiva, if you want, I can invite you.”
“It was then that Tony had the brilliant idea, as usual, and without asking any of us, because he knew what Silvio’s songs had meant for us in prison, he responded: “Listen, I am not only going, I will also bring my brothers, take it for granted.”
“Afterwards, during a visit of the Cuban Five to the legendary troubadour we agreed to do that. The initial idea was only sing El Necio. But then came Victor Casaus, Vicente with Creeme (Believe me) and you saw how it ended. Tony was unstoppable.”
“You could live the rest of the emotions, as well as the entire Cuba and many other parts of the world.”
