Alina Balseiro, president of the National Electoral Commission (CEN) in Cuba said in a press conference that we are in better conditions this year, for the partial elections to be held to select the delegates for the municipal assemblies.

She also said that from January 11 to 20 the authorities of the districts will take up their posts and the capacity will last until January 24.

From that moment on they will work in the updating and reorganization of the structures in each Defense Committee of the Revolution (CDR) as part of the current process of unification and reduction of electoral districts.

Balseiro explained that during the last period there were 14, 537 districts and for the current period, the electoral commissions agreed in their first working meeting the existence of 12, 589, from them 40 are special ones.

In this sense, she reminded that the districts are not only founded for electoral processes, but above all, for the development of the daily activities in the community, and it is there, where the delegates for the districts are elected to represent their electors.

After the electoral commissions of the districts are created in the districts, from February 6 to 15 there will be a training of its members, who are responsible to lead the electoral process according to article 30, paragraph b of the Electoral Law.

Afterwards, from February 26 to 28, they will determine the areas for the candidates’ nomination and they will pass the program of the assemblies which will take place from February 24 to March 25.

In the working meeting with the press, it was also informed that the National Electoral Commission will carry out on January 27, 28 and 30, territorial meetings on the western, central and eastern territories to evaluate the job.

They are working at present with the support planning like communications, transportation, and informatics security, among others.

Something new will be the participation of observers in the districts appointed by the CEN with a different purpose from those in other countries.

According to Balseiro, they will practice their responsibility with a guide of observation and they can neither be interviewed nor give any information. They are going to be the eyes of all the commissions, she said, and they will inform us on the development of the work, because they have no commitment with any of the entities participating in the process.

The president of the CEN highlighted that the elections in Cuba are ethical, transparent and attached to the truth.
