UN Highlights Cuban Actions in Sustainable Development

The deputy executive director of the UN Program for Environment, Ibrahim Thiaw considered as privilege and a pleasure his stay in Cuba, where he could see the actions carried out on actions of the environment and sustainable development.

In declarations to Granma Newspaper, few hours before his visit of work to Cuba ended, the distinguished guest said that in the topic related to mitigation of disasters, will be very important that the rest of the world know the Cuban experience.

“On behalf the UN Program for Environment organization we will be very happy to help,” Mr. Thiaw said and stressed the disposition of the international organization to support Cuba in all they could do to share experience at the international level in the matter of prevention of disasters.

He noted his presence in Cuba had the main goal to learn the job done in Cuba and analyze together with the authorities future possibilities of cooperation, taking into consideration the importance of Cuba inside the Caribbean and the developing insular States.

“Unfortunately, this is a country affected by natural phenomena, but the system created from the local to the national level is impressive,” Mr. Thiaw said when referring to his round at the Headquarters of the General Staff of the Civil Defense and the Meteorology Institute.

Ibrahim Thiaw, who will continue his working plan in the regional office of the UN Program for Environment in Panama, also stressed the job done by Cuba in relation to the sustainable development.

“We have seen concrete examples on the sustainable consumption and production, which is an important topic for this organization. We met farmers that are able to harvest productions free from agricultural chemicals; visited a biosphere reserve where we could appreciate the results after 40 years of steady effort for its preservation,” he said.
