People from Camaguey Ready for the Sugar Harvest

The beginning of the sugar harvest 2013-2014 is about to start in Camaguey, and the workers, together with the machines are getting ready, so they could fulfil the sugar plan which is about 180,000 tons, a 12 percent more than last year.

According to Vladimir Perez Garcia, director of the sugar enterprise in the province, “the reparations of the machines are at the 94 percent. It is all fixed to the plan that will allow the harvest to start in December in the sugar mills Batalla de las Guasimas and Argentina.”

The director also commented that at the beginning of November they will start some engineering exercises, where the machines will be already painted and fixed, and all the appliances participating after the closing of the harvest, what will permit that “everything will go well and there will be no problems.”

But, even when they guarantee the efficiency of the preparation, some sugar cane cutters are worried about the incorporation of the sugar mill Brazil, where they have not been able to start the investment process because “it has not been passed its financing for the next harvest”, Perez Garcia said, so it will be a threat for the fulfilment of the sugar plan of the province no matter they have drawn a strategy for the first days, in case they could not start, they could compensate the deficit.”

Something else that also worries the workers is the conditions of the railroads that will permit the transportation of the sugar cane.

Pedro Luis Garcia, director of the Railway in the province said the reparation and the guarantee of the harvest is at the 40 percent, partially, because there is lack of parts with quality.

Directives from the enterprise had although agreed, the problem of the ties should improve, thanks to a group of resources that has arrived to the territory.

The directives also noted that due to the bad conditions of the trucks, they signed some contracts with TransMec to guarantee the purchase of some good spare parts.
