Cuba and ALBA Bloc Increase Assistance to Haiti

A total of 1,200 health specialists – including Cubans, young Haitians, Americans and Nicaraguans – are already working in Haiti, including 706 in the capital

Twenty-six days after a devastating earthquake hit Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti -- leaving some 212,000 dead people according to official figures -- Cuba and the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA) regional integration and cooperation bloc continue increasing their humanitarian assistance to the Haitian people.

A report from the coordination board of the Medical Brigade in Port-au-Prince notes that, as of last Friday, a total of 1,200 health specialists – including Cubans, young Haitians, Americans and Nicaraguans – are already working in Haiti, including 706 in the capital.

A total of 402 Haitians health specialists -- 219 graduates, 67 interns and 116 fifth-year students from Cuba’s Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) -- are working with the Cuban medical brigade.

It was also announced that more 65,031 patients have been treated and that a cargo of 2.5 tons that includes an ambulance module and equipment for rehabilitation facilities and Comprehensive Diagnosis Centers arrived in Port-au-Prince.

These actions are part of a comprehensive plan by ALBA to assist the people of Haiti.
