Recognition of Eusebio Leal on the 500th anniversary of Havana

The People’s Power Assembly of Havana (local government body) made a special recognition to the historian of this capital, Eusebio Leal Spengler, for his exemplary work in the recovery of the heritage of the city.
This happened in an extraordinary session of the Havana legislature on occasion of celebrating the 500th anniversary of Havana, which was attended by the highest authorities of the island.

In the García Lorca room of the Great Theater of Havana ‘Alicia Alonso’, were Army General Raúl Castro, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba; the president of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel; and the president of the National People’s Power Assembly and of the State Council, Esteban Lazo.

The session, led by Reinaldo García Zapata, president of the capital’s government body, granted for only once, a Special Recognition for the 500 years of Havana to Leal, ‘a man who carries our Havana in the heart and who, in reciprocal feeling to those who inhabit it, they feel equal affection for him ‘, says the resolution approved by the delegates that make up the provincial parliament.

Prolonged applause accompanied the merits and responsibilities of the historian of the Cuban capital, self-taught, intellectual, politician, essayist and researcher, who was absent due to health problems.

Eusebio Leal Spengler is a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power. Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations system and advisor on the topic for the Eradication of Poverty, of the United Nations Development Program.

Also, Honorary Doctor of several universities in Latin America and Europe. A large part of the rescue work carried out in the historic center of Havana is due to his efforts and hard labor.

Among other national and international awards and decorations, he holds the Victor Hugo Medal and the Medal of the World Decade for Cultural Development, presented by Unesco. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
