Two new high-tech assisted reproduction centers will open in Cuba this 2019 to care for the infertile couple, an official from the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap) explained in Havana.

These institutions will be established in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Camagüey for the benefit of the population of the southeast and central-eastern regions, respectively, informed the head of the Maternal and Child Department of Minsap, Roberto Álvarez.

He explained that despite the economic limitations, the country is also betting on modernizing the equipment in the four centers located in the Hermanos Ameijeiras and Ramón González Coro hospitals in Havana, Gustavo Aldereguía Lima in Cienfuegos and the Vladimir Ilich Lenin in Holguín .

Likewise, a specialized maintenance plan is planned for the existing equipment and the gas and air conditioning systems, in order to avoid a stop in the services provided.

Semen cryopreservation, ovule donation, artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization are some of the assisted reproduction techniques that are carried out in these centers that need, besides spare parts, medicines, reagents, expendable material and culture media.

According to Alvarez, in recent years Cuba has allocated more than four million dollars a year to the Infertile Couple Care Program that includes actions aimed at preventing infertility, stimulating births, as well as achieving safe motherhood and the health of the sexual reproductive system. .

He said that until March of this year more than 14 thousand 190 couples visited for the first time the consultations of the care network and 155 thousand pregnancies were achieved, 739 more than those obtained in the same period of 2018.

We are also working to make procedures linked to assisted reproduction more effective, that is, to achieve more pregnancies of women inseminated in the provincial services and in those women who needed an embryo transfer in the high technology centers. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
