Cuban Ambassador to the Netherlands Soraya Alvarez spoke at the 90th session of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), where she highlighted her country’s traditional constructive stance at that body.

Diplomatic sources reported on Saturday that the ambassador to the Netherlands and Havana’s permanent representative at the OPCW repeated the need for that organization to preserve its technical mandate and continue to act decisively with a view to achieving the destruction of all chemical weapons.

Alvarez also favored promoting free trade in chemical products and international cooperation, in order to improve the economic and technological development of all States.

The Cuban diplomat insisted on the compliance with the provisions of Article XI of the Convention, by eliminating any discriminatory restrictions, such as unilateral sanctions.

She also supported holding the annual workshop to review and assess the components of an agreed framework for the implementation of the aforementioned article, because it is a useful platform to move towards its full enforcement.

In her speech, Alvarez also stressed that cooperation and the search for consensus should prevail in the development of the works. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
