Experts Debate Progress in Geological Exploration in Cuba

Speaking at the 19th Scientific Convention on Engineering and Architecture, held at Havana’s Convention Center, the specialist mentioned gold (with a predominance of exploration), zinc, aluminum and nickel, as well as iron and copper, among the most significant metals.

Regarding the main exploration destinations, he assured that Canada and Australia lead the world purchases.

Castellanos also explained that 44 percent of the total exploration close to existing mines in Latin America is dedicated to gold.

Referring to Cuba’s achievements, the expert highlighted the use of gravimetry to check magnetic and electromagnetic aerial anomalies in the search for sulfides.

He also exemplified the presence of drilling wells in Camagüey and Las Tunas provinces, which have won in instrumentation.

According to Castellanos, achievements have been made in remote sensing, including high-resolution satellite imagery, as well as other aerial hyperspectral and point (hyper) spectral analysis of rocks and cores.

These breakthroughs have helped define and characterize mineral deposits and identify features on the surface and in field samples, said the Cuban expert.
