Delegates to the 10th Congress of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC in Spanish) will discuss today on the model necessary to socialism in this island.

Such debates occupy today the agenda of the last day of deliberations in the venue dedicated to historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, the anniversary 55 of UPEC (founded on July 15, 1963) and Antonio Molto, president of UPEC deceased on August, 2017.

The eve, members discussed essentially on the contribution that Cuban journalists can give Cuban media through the enactment of a New Communication Policy.

When presenting the issue, the member of the UPEC National Committee, Raul Garces mentioned several of the challenges in this process, among them those of the management, innovation and credibility of the media.

Garces, also dean of the Faculty of Communication at the University of Havana, reminded those present that a group of objectives and principles ‘do not solve like magic problems and sometimes historically accumulated with cultural sediment’.

However, he asserted that ‘in the case of Cuba, amid all the past and present threats, it is the opportunity to give socialism a modern, participative, innovating and unwaveringly democratic’.

According to Marino Murillo, member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, who accompanied journalists in their debate, it will not be easy to apply all the elements of the approved policy.

Among other issues, he referred to the difficulty in measuring the indicators to evaluate its application.

If we are not clear on that, implementation could be delayed, he said.

He also referred to the pertinence of a process to update and inform on the Communication Policy to all State institutiions.

This Friday, journalists also discussed modifications to the statutes of UPEC and its Code of Ethics, and approved that the National Committee of UPEC be oriented for its implementation.

The delegates elected the presidency of the guild association and expressed their opinions on rights and duties, as well as guarantees for the effective exercise of that profession. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
