The 10th International Congress on Disasters began in Havana with the will of its participants to strengthen collaboration to prepare and protect countries against the risks of adverse climatic events.
In opening remarks, Major General Ramon Pardo, head of the National General Staff of Civil Defense, stressed that the event is dedicated to the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who promoted an essentially humanist process to raise the quality of the people.
Pardo added that the event’s organization shows Cuba’s interest in gathering authorities, scientists and professionals from all over the world dedicated to work to reduce disaster risks.
Pardo also pointed out the event aims to exchange knowledge and results on good practices, as well as to showcase experiences of the work being done in the Caribbean nation to reduce vulnerabilities and build resilience.
In addition, the Sixth International Firefighters’ Conference has its space with a view to improving the performance of the missions carried out by these professionals, the Major General highlighted.
He also pondered the depth of the scientific works presented at the event, aimed at promoting the exchange of participants with the scientific and social updating in the human, economic, environmental and territorial levels.
The 10th International Congress on Disasters and the 6th International Conference of Firefighters, organized by the Civil Defense and Fire Brigade, have a large number of Cuban and foreign experts interested in bringing ideas on sustainable development, adaptation to climate change, disaster risk reduction and resilience.
The event, which will conclude on Friday, will be attended by representatives of scientific institutions, agencies, funds and programs of the United Nations system and the humanitarian aid coordination and disaster reduction strategy offices. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
