Progress is being made by the commission charged with writing the first draft of a new Constitution, headed by its president, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba.

During this past week, June 10-15, wide-ranging and profound discussion has continued among commission members, with the goal of putting a document into the hands of the people that will strengthen the Revolution.

Also participating in the meetings were Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and José Ramón Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Party Central Committee, who emphasized the importance of reinforcing the country’s socialist institutionality, the decisive role of the Constitution in legislation, and the need for a Magna Carta that reflects the country’s economic, political, and social reality.

As content is being identified, proposals have been made to incorporate rights and responsibilities with the goal of strengthening the relationship between the state and citizens.

The commission is likewise looking to improve the system of state bodies, with a view toward favoring a stronger link with the people, and their more effective participation in the work of People’s Power.

As has been reported, once the commission has completed its first draft, this document will be evaluated by the National Assembly and by the population in a process of broad discussion across the country. Recommendations will be considered, and a final draft submitted for approval in a referendum. (Taken from en.granma.cu)
