Uruguay Commemorates 55 Years of Cuban Medical Collaboration

In a ceremony celebrated last night in the Federation of Workers of the Meat Industry, located in the Cerro, a working-class neighborhood of Montevideo, the immense value of this ‘colossal humanitarian work’ that officially began in Algeria on May 23, 1963, was highlighted.

The commemoration recalled the internationalist practical example of Che and the great vision of future of Fidel as the promoter and creator of that initiative, which since then prompted 407,000 professionals and health technicians to fulfill their mission to save lives in 164 countries of the world.

The celebration, which was chaired by the island’s ambassador, Héctor Fraginals, the formel Uruguayan president José Mujica and Sixto Amaro, president of the National Organization of Retirees and Pensioners, served to honor the professionals and technicians that today make up the Cuban Medical Brigade in Uruguay.

As a token of gratitude, they received diplomas ‘for their unconditional support’ to carry out their work, handed over by Uruguayan State and Government institutions, social organizations, trade unions, the PIT-CNT Workers’ Union and personalities.

A special recognition deserved the president, Tabaré Vázquez, for being from the beginning ‘the main political driver’ of Cuban medical cooperation in Uruguay.

The head of state made clear his conviction that friendly relations between both countries ‘will deepen even more in favor of the development of our peoples.’ (Taken from Prensa Latina)
