The first geodetic measurements campaign for geodynamic purposes in eastern Cuba was carried out with the participation of Cuban and French researchers, as a significant step towards perfecting the seismic hazard calculation.
Dr. Oleary Gonzalez, a specialist at the National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais), told Prensa Latina that this initiative is part of the PREST (Regional Future Earthquake Monitoring Platform) project.
The expected results, he assured, will allow a qualitative leap in the estimation of the seismic hazard in the Antilles region.
The expert pointed out that not only Cuban institutions participate but also those from France, the Lesser Antilles and Haiti, addressing in the last two cases to the common exposure to the threats of earthquakes and tsunamis.
He stressed that it is also a continuation of the regional project Tsuareg (Regional Tsunami Warning) also financed by the European Union and foresees geodynamic research in the insular Caribbean, particularly in the limits of plates that generate significant earthquakes with possible impact on Haiti and Cuba.
Gonzalez added that these calculations were developed mainly in the places where Cuban National Seismological Service stations are installed and they will allow knowing the movement of faults in the interior of eastern Cuba in the medium and long term.
To this remarkable information will be added the one related to the movement of this region of the country in relation to the adjacent areas, that is to say, Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Great Inagua, the scientist indicated.
Four seismic broadband stations were installed in the provinces of Holguin, Granma and Guantanamo and they hope to locate another one in Las Tunas, which will strengthen seismic monitoring, the researcher highlighted. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
