The first fair on rural women’s learning and experiences in Cuba was held in Havana with the aim of confirming the progress of women’s empowerment in rural areas.
Presidents of cooperatives, farms, successful producers, all members of a movement that seeks greater integration of women to strengthen food security in the country, participated in the fair.

Representatives of the United Nations System in Cuba, whose mandate deals with gender issues, and international organizations that cooperate in several programs also attended the event.

Among the projects linked to the empowerment of rural women is one promoted by the Local Development Fund to treat gender inequalities in the forestry sector in Villa Clara province, about 350 kilometers east of Havana.

Another program is related to the production of beans, aimed at developing gender capacities and economic empowerment, and the promotion of gardens managed by women and supported by cooperatives, in coordination with the Grain Research Institute.

Luis Placido Ortega, an assistant from the World Food Program, stated that great achievements in the gender issue that involve bigger challenges are confirmed.

The Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) has gone from the awareness phase of the problems to dealing with their causes.

At the closing session of the event, MINAG’s training director, Alcides Lopez, expressed the ministry’s commitment to further supporting the empowerment of women and young people in the sector. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
