Cuba holds on as more airlines land in the 10 air terminals attending international flights, it was officially reported.

A report published this Wednesday in Granma newspaper, quotes declarations of the president of the Cuban Institute of Civil Aeronautics (IACC), Alfredo Cordero, who expressed optimism due to the increase of flights to this country, above all with vacationists. In a lengthy report on this economic activity, Cordero refers that by the end of 2016, there was an 18 percent increase over then previous year, as the result of the interest aroused by Cuba in travelers worldwide.

He assured the high season of tourism in the island (November-April) can register 17 percent over last year’s season.

The sustained increase in the entry of passengers to the country was supported with a fast development of air operations and a slight growth in investments.

By the end of last year, this archipelago faced arrival of planes of 80 airlines, of which 61 were regular and 19, chartered.

Next summer another airline will be welcome from Surinam. The companies already flying to Cuba recognize the improvement in a faster reception of passengers.

As for the traffic handled by the international airport of Havana, Jose Marti, he said 60 to 80 of the over 150 flights received daily in this nation come to this terminal, whose operations increased by 24 percent last year.

The island, said Cordero, received 4.2 million visitors from abroad and at the end of this January, the rise was 15 percent in the arrival of travelers.

Already on March 4 the first million passengers arrived, seven days before last year, said the director general of Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, Maria del Carmen Orellana, confirming the trend upward in arrivals and income.

Although the European markets intensify the emission of tourists to the island, number one emitter is reserved to Canada, which sends 30 percent of all vacationists.

Passengers received from the United States show a rising performance in 2016, with 284 thousand 937 US citizens, for a 74 percent increase, compared to 2015.

During the first quarter frequencies planned by some airlines as American Airlines and Jet Blue were doubled. Others flying to Cuba are Delta, Spirit, United Airlines, Alaska, Frontier, Southwest and Sun Country. This year, the Cuban Ministry of Tourism estimates receiving 164 thousand 400 foreign visitors more than in 2016. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
