The leadership of the National Assembly of People’s Power has released information about the review, taking place on a provincial level, of the recently concluded presentation of accountability reports by municipal delegates to constituents.

Ten provinces have completed their evaluations of the process which took place October through December, last year.

Miriam Brito Sarroca, National Assembly secretary, reported to the press that these analyses have focused on delegates’ preparation, support provided, the participation of young observers, the number of local meetings cancelled, and responses provided to citizens’ queries and proposals.

Rafael Fuentes León, head of attention to local People’s Power bodies, reported that understanding of the country’s budgeting process and procedures for the implementation of proposals has improved, adding that a better job was done publicizing the meetings, during this most recent round of reports.

The participation of more than 2,500 high school students as observers of the assemblies was considered a positive experience.

Nevertheless, shortcomings were noted. The accountability assemblies do not always provide an opportunity for political debate, or discussion of the community’s problems, in which the delegate reports and promotes dialogue among citizens, Fuentes commented.

There was insufficient attendance in some areas and local governments did not always provide adequate support, he said.

Roberto Armas López, National Assembly Secretariat information officer, reported that 70,053 local accountability assemblies were planned, in which 6.3 million citizens participated. (Taken from Granma)
