From 2000 on, there had emerged in Latin America and the Caribbean a new generation of integration processes with new models and plans where the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of America- Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) highlights and on December 14 will celebrate its 10th anniversary, so that day, there will be a summit in Havana.

In an exclusive to Trabajdores Newspaper, the ambassador from the Republic of Ecuador in Cuba, Edgar Ponce shared some view points with our readers.

Ecuador joined ALBA-TCP in 2009, a project of integration for Latin America and the Caribbean inspired in the struggles of our liberating leaders, in the Bolivarian doctrine of union and sovereignty of our peoples, which today is the manifestation of the historical progressive forces of the continent to demonstrate another America, is possible.

“Since its beginning, it paved the basis for other mechanisms of integration, which at present are getting stronger and wider in several nations.  The peoples can speak with their own voices, and even more those like us that are lucky to have a progressive and left government. Their voices are not only heard in ALBA but also in other countries worldwide. It is evident we are not in the same conditions that those 10 years ago. Today, it is a mechanism for solidarity.

When asking him about the areas of greater exchange of his country with ALBA, the ambassador reminded the integral agreement of economic cooperation where Ecuador and Cuba recently signed an agreement that will strengthen the bilateral commercial relations.

In this sense there are foreseen commitments in the development of the scientific and technical, economic and trade sectors; in the bio-pharmaceutical industry, the training of Ecuadorian doctors in Cuba, the exchange of technical packages, exportation of food and the assimilation in the Cuban market of those products for tourism.

ALBA-TCP has mean to Ecuador the possibility to face political challenges at international level. We have made clear our main principles in international rights and those of our peoples. We have health, education, technological exchanges, commerce, investments; these are some of the benefits we have got.

“The block focuses its priorities on economic advances, after taking care of the literacy campaign and health. ALBA-TCP promotes a new kind of trade by the Sucre virtual currency. So far, about 100 enterprises are using this system, which has become the main way of trading to strengthen commerce between the country members. The main tools are solidarity, genuine comprehension in pursue the welfare of the peoples. ALBA-TCP has gotten stronger in front of the American opposition ALCA, aimed to the annexation of the economies in the region, and it has been the greatest achievements of the progressive forces.

The diplomat considers the first challenge of ALBA is to consolidate as a space where there are political forces that share a common project in the regional diversification: “We hope to become a left political conscience in the world and also in the new Latin American integration with respect, but, doing all in need so the transformation agenda get to the international debate. That is the real challenge. This is a political alliance that assumes positions with consensus in defense to Mother Earth, of the human rights, against interventionism and the war. It also works for peace and the self determination of the peoples.
