The Central University Marta Abreu from Villa Clara, central province of Cuba, has highlighted for the tradition and diversity in its amateur movement.

In the 1970s and 1980s last century musical groups, soloists, small format groups, theater and literature were awarded.

Central Alvento is a project that has shown its value thanks to the constant vocal performance, which has had the support of the famed teacher Digna Guerra.

Belkis Marrero, its director, explained they perform a varied repertoire from sacred to classic Cuban music.

It is a project for the university and also the community. There are several formats: feminine and mixed choirs, small format groups, instrumentalists, and so on,” she said.

“Selection is hard and we need to renew it. Festivals are the best moments for new talents’ training.

The Dancing Group December 5, leaded by Gerardo Alvarez, with 25 years of experience, is the insignia of the amateur movement. This group performs Caribbean and Cuban dances.”

Festivals are a rush in each of the 13 faculties of this university. They last three months. Everybody gets involved.

Gingley Duran, Deputy Advisor of the university in communication explained how the amateur artists from this college are part of the cultural and social life of this province. “They perform in popular councils, prisons, hospitals, in art and literature events carried out in this territory.”
